Frequently Asked Questions
about IconForge and ActivIcons
Q: I would like to have an custom icon display whenever my CD (or DVD) disc is inserted.
- Although there are programs available which will do this for you, it is really a simple process which only requires Notepad, or a similar text editor...
- create a short text file in Notepad having as its file name autorun.inf;
- the autorun.inf file should contain the following 3 lines:
[autorun]
open=YOURPROGRAM.EXE
icon=YOURICON.ICO
- Replace YOURPROGRAM.EXE with the name of the program you wish Windows to automatically run whenever the CD is inserted (you may remove this line if you only want the icon, without specifying a program to run);
- Replace YOURICON.ICO with the name of a custom icon for the CD (optional);
- The autorun.inf file must be burned in the root directory/folder on the CD or DVD disc.
You can also use the same autorun.inf technique to assign an icon to other physical and virtual drives, simply by placing the autorun.inf file and .ico file in the root folder of the drive. You will need to reboot before the icon will be read. There are some drives which set their icons in the Windows Registry, however, and these may usually be changed by locating the icon under the ActivIcons utility's "Default System Icons" screen, which reads the icons set in the Registry.
