about IconForge and ActivIcons
Q: How can I change the icon for an existing program?
- You can also change the icon for most .exe and .dll program files using our IconForge product. Here are the steps:
- Make a copy of the program's exe or dll file in a different folder (it is also an excellent idea to make a second backup copy, as some programs object to having their icon changed, so it is best to keep an unaltered copy);
- Go to the File menu, choose Open;
- At the bottom of the dialog, be certain that the Show Preview option is marked;
- In the file list panel, select the program file which you copied;
- In preview panel on the right side, scroll down until you find the icon you wish to change (there may be several versions of this displayed, and you will need to change each version in turn);
- Click the OK button to load the icon;
- Make the changes to the icon. If you have an existing icon, you can open that as well and use Edit/Copy to copy to the program's icon;
- Do not change the icon size or color depth;
- When you are finished making changes, go to the File menu and click Save (do NOT use Save As);
- Depending on your program, there may be other versions of the icon which you may change by repeating this process;
- Copy your edited program file to overwrite the existing program file;
- Once the file has been copied, press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys simultaneously to reboot your system.
If your changed icon does not immediately appear in Windows, go to IconForge's Edit menu and click the Rebuild Windows Icon Cache function.
